Ilene Writings About Art

Ilene Images as Good Medicine:

It is said that an image that you see registers in your brain faster than sound or language. It goes directly in and can linger, tumble about and influence what you think and what you are. That is why art is the most powerful medium you can open to.

For this reason I have created images that are deliberately meant to uplift, inspire and give you hope. My work, in short, is good medicine. I design my work principally for women. Because I am a woman I understand something of the pathways we can travel. These paths can be difficult and sometimes heart breaking, so we need lifting up. We need images that excite the eye, stimulate the brain and wake us up!

When you work with one of my images it is grounded in meaningful symbolism and dynamic color that delights and stimulates positivity. I have explored archeology and traveled in the cultures of the Americas. I understand the value of that which is seen and unseen. I embrace my spirituality as a women and I bring that philosophy into my work.

This is an invitation to travel with me as you look through my work. Let it open your heart and your Soul. Let yourself, as the American Indians say, enter a place where art becomes your good medicine. Let it take you to a place of hope, inspiration and love.

Ilene Artist Statement:

I am a painter and writer of the images of the sacred feminine

from the ancient past to the ancient future.

For many years I have had a passionate interest in mythology,

archeology, psychology, and anthropology. Since I was a child of

nine, I have thrown myself into the studies of Egyptian, Greek and

other worldly cultures. I have traveled to Central America,

studying both the ancient and modern Maya throughout Mexico

and Guatemala and Honduras.

I have stood in the remote sites of the Olmec’s , and have

studied and conducted tours of the Mother/Spider Goddess culture

of Teotihuacán near Mexico City. It has been my privilege to walk

in ancient ruins over two thousand years old and to climb to the top

of numerous heavenly pyramids.

It is my intent to bring my work up from the collective dream

or vision of humanity that is more than twenty thousand years old

and make it new, alive, vibrant and relevant to our time. I want to

capture the essence, the magic, if you will, of Sacred Feminine

stories and tell them in my own way in my art and writing.

I paint with jewel-like colors combined to dazzle the eye and

open the heart. I have been sustained by an intense interest in

ornamentation, symbolism, and cross-cultural designs. My

paintings are created to not just to be seen, but also to be felt.

It is my commitment to help women be empowered by this

remembrance of their feminine power and find deeper meaning in

their lives through my artist stories.

My work has been shown all over the United States. I have

taught art classes since 1990 working with hundreds of students

find their inner artist. I give lectures and workshops on the power

of creativity, story and the sacred feminine to transform women’s

lives.

In 2008, I was honored by the Tz’utujil Maya of Santiago

Atitlan, Guatemala, by being made a shaman. This high honor was

given to me for my commitment to the sacred feminine and my

work as an artist exploring the Mayan idea of the unseen world

through creativity.

Sophia and the Seven Goddesses

My talents continue to expand in finding new ways to express

myself. In 2008 I co-created an award-winning book for young

women writing and illustrated it. The book is called Sophia and the

Seven Goddesses. In it I create, through story, a way for young girls

to find a new identity based on inner strength and self acceptance.

It has received the Dove Seal of Approval from the Dove

Foundation in 2009

Also the 2009 Seal of Excellence from Creative Child Magazine
